The Collegiate Experience*

Colleges are where Cambridge students live, eat and socialise, and where they receive small group teaching sessions called supervisions, which are regarded as one of the best teaching models in the world. Colleges are also self-governing; while they are part of the University (subject to University regulations) they select their own students and have their own internal procedures. Although students receive the same outstanding education whichever college they attend, each has its own unique history, environment and identity.

Sidney Sussex

Sidney Sussex College was founded on St. Valentine's Day in 1596 by the legacy of Lady Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex. The College is in the historic heart of Cambridge, and its beautiful buildings and gardens are home to a dynamic and diverse academic community. Our students, Fellows and staff come from all backgrounds and all over the world, drawn by the University of Cambridge's world-class reputation and Sidney Sussex's commitment to excellence in teaching and research.

Clare Hall

Clare Hall was founded in 1966 on the initiative of Clare College. It was envisaged as a college with three main classes of members: university teaching officers whose principal focus was research; visiting academics who would stay in Cambridge for between six months and a year; and graduate students. The President, Fellows, Visiting Fellows and graduate students together make up an integrated academic society that is not constrained by hierarchy and is consequently a culturally rich and intellectually diverse environment for advanced study.

Lucy Cavendish

Lucy Cavendish College is the latest and perhaps the last women's college to be founded in the United Kingdom. The college was established in 1965, initially as an experimental female academy for women graduates. The development of the college grew out of the vision and determination of three women who formed a Dining Group in Cambridge in 1951. In the five decades since Lucy Cavendish was founded both the College and the many women who have studied here have been transformed in ways few people would suspect. The College prides itself on its strong sense of community, and the pursuit of academic excellence is combined with a friendly atmosphere and a warm informality.

Hughes Hall

Hughes Hall, established in the 19th century as the Cambridge Training College for Women, holds a rich historical legacy. Its original mission was to provide a dedicated college within the University of Cambridge for the training of women graduates preparing for careers in teaching. Over time, Hughes Hall has evolved and expanded its mission, embracing a broader community of students and researchers, now inclusive of both men and women. The college's picturesque campus is spread across a collection of charming 19th- and 20th-century buildings, creating a unique and historically rich atmosphere. Nestled between the vibrant City Centre and the railway station, Hughes Hall enjoys a central location that offers easy access to both the academic and transportation hubs of Cambridge.
